What are sun dogs?

“Sun dogs are an atmospheric phenomenon that create bright luminous rings or halos on either side of the sun. They can be seen anywhere in the world during any season, but they are most conspicuous when the sun is low. Sun dogs in the winter are made by ice crystals called diamond dust that drift in the air at low levels. These crystals act as prisms, bending the light rays passing through them with a minimum deflection of 22°. If the crystals are randomly oriented, a complete ring around the sun is seen — a halo. But often, as the crystals sink through the air they become vertically aligned, so sunlight is refracted horizontally — in this case, sundogs are seen.” {Wikipedia}

Sun Dogs are also intensely beautiful and are quite amazing to behold in the Canadian Winters.

These following 3 images were taken over various farmers fields near Edmonton. Over the weekend we had our first major snow fall and cold spell since November, and what a surprise it was when I was driving home only to see these beautiful halos on a sunny Sunday January afternoon! So I grabbed my camera to finally end my TWO year quest! …And to acclimatize myself for my upcoming Alaska trip in two months, but that’ll be another story for another day!

A San Francisco cable car holds 60 people. This blog was viewed about 3,200 times in 2011. If it were a cable car, it would take about 53 trips to carry that many people.

One attribute that I was trying to master this year was to capture images in both high and low keys. That is, to take masculine and feminine images; while being a male photographer. This is not an easy feat when you’re of the opposite gender!

My final images I will leave you with are some of my favorites of lately, and they’re all high key! I love macarons, cappuccinos and coffee and what a better way to end the year off on a positive note by featuring culinary delights that I love!

It includes images from Etretat, a small fishing village on the northern coast of France. It features three sea arches, the Atlantic Ocean, and a world of charm! It’s no wonder Monet loved this village!

Another highlight in France is Mont St. Michel. A medieval castle and tidal island off the Normandy Coast that has been a monastery since the 8th century (Wikipedia).

This week’s photos of the week are all about the largest and most romantic city in France, I am sure you’ve heard of it, it’s called Paris.

This metropolitan centre of 12 million people is “one of the world’s leading business and cultural centres, and its influences in politics, education, entertainment, media, fashion, science, and the arts all contribute to its status as one of the world’s major global cities.” {Wikipedia}

It is certainly one of the most expensive cities I’ve ever visited, but arguably one of the most memorable both architecturally and culturally. And, who can forget the macarons, pastries and other culinary delights!

This week’s photos of the week are all about a tiny, vibrant and colorful island that is 7 km from the shores of Venice, Italy. This island of 2800 people is full of culture, charm and sensory appeal!

Burano has its own set of architectural guidelines. As referenced from Wikipedia, “The colours of the houses follow a specific system originating from the golden age of its development; if someone wishes to paint their home, one must send a request to the government, who will respond by making notice of the certain colours permitted for that lot.”

I wish Canada would have some neighborhoods that adopted these architectural guidelines! …Don’t you agree?
