October 13, 2012 – Photos of the Week: A Photographic Journey and Journal of Iceland #4 (featuring Northern Lights)

As my readers can recall, we’ve become sort of obsessed with Northern Lights as of lately. So while I was researching and planning our escapades in Iceland I just had to incorporate a time frame in which opportunities to view the Northern Lights in Iceland exist. I discovered that due to the aurora cycle, which peaks every 11 years, we should have opportunities to view the auroras as early as September. This is one of the reasons why I booked 2 weeks that spanned August and September.

Well, we were almost disappointed. Most of the overnights were cloudy or rainy so when we saw this aurora on a late September evening we were pretty stoked!

In the following image you can see the aurora dancing above the clouds, and over the Atlantic Ocean, with the full moon glistening over the waters.

In the meantime, when we were driving home from our cousins wedding last Sunday night we saw the following auroras over the skies. This aurora was particularly stunning and had a KP (rating) of 6; the highest KP rating is 10. They were so bright that we were able to see them on the southside of Edmonton, which never seems to happen due to our city’s light pollution.

So enjoy!
