December 20, 2009 – Photo of the Week: “New Stone Swan Palace”

To celebrate the posting of our Germany pictures I am featuring a famous Bavarian Castle as my photo of the week.

Neuschwanstein.

A beautiful and amazing castle. Mysterious, Grand, and majestic are all appropriate words to describe the castle that King Ludwig II built in Schwangau, Bavaria, Germany.

Neuschwanstein was built on a hill that overlooks Hohenschwangau (another castle), in the Swan County Valley near Fussen. It was originally going to be called New Hohenschwangau but the name Neuschwanstein was coined after his death.

Its construction was started in 1869, but unfortunately, Ludwig II did not live to see its completion as he died in 1886.

This beautiful castle was the inspiration for the Sleeping Beauty castles in Disney’s theme parks.

Until next week and the launch of our Switzerland folder, Merry Christmas everyone!
